Hats and headpieces can be classy, fun, elegant and downright gorgeous. The art of millinery seemed to have all but died out up until a few years ago when hats and headpieces came became fashionable. A wedding headpiece can be the crowning glory of your entire ensemble and is an ideal opportunity to express your unique personality. That being said there are so many different styles to choose from and so if you are feeling overwhelmed it is no surprise. The following guide to choosing wedding hats and headpieces will help you to find the right headpiece to wear on your special day.

Choose a wedding hat or headpiece that compliments your wedding gown – If planning a traditional wedding with a gown that has a long train a long veil is the most likely choice to compliment your dress. For more modern brides a fascinator may be more desirable and fun to wear. The aim of a headpiece is to add an extra touch of elegance and beauty to the bride’s appearance but should never overshadow the gown itself. Your headpiece, whether a veil or otherwise, should match the color of your wedding gown.

The headpiece you choose should flatter your face – Typically, for brides with a long, narrow face the headpiece chosen should be wide, such as a wide-brimmed hat. For those with a round, full face should add height, such as a tiara or pill box. You may need to try on a number of different styles to find the style that best suits your face shape.

Take into account the way you will wear your hair – Your hairstyle will have a large impact on the headpiece you choose. When trying on headpieces try to have your hair in the style it will be on your wedding day. This is particularly important for brides with long hair. Decide before choosing a headpiece whether you will be wearing your hair long and loose or swept up or a combination of both. Some styles of headpiece will look better on short hair than on long, and vice versa of course.

Make sure the headpiece fits well and is comfortable to wear – While you want to look your best on your wedding day and probably feel that there isn’t anything you wouldn’t do to look beautiful when it comes to headpieces comfort and correct fit are important. Choose a style that you feel confident wearing and insure that it fits the shape and size of your head perfectly.

Choose a style that reflects your personality – Whether you are fun-loving, whimsical, down-to-earth or quiet, choose a style that reflects your unique personality. If you have chosen a particularly elaborate wedding gown it is best to go with something simple but elegant in a headpiece, but if your wedding dress is fairly plain it may be fun to go with something a little more flirty and fun for a headpiece.

Consider your wedding venue – If getting married indoors almost any headpiece will be fine, but if your marriage ceremony is being held outdoors the headpiece you wear must be able to remain securely attached to your head should it become breezy. If rain is a possibility bear this in mind and choose a headpiece that won’t wilt if it gets a little water on it.

Mix it up a little – If you are having a lot of difficulty deciding between a fascinator or a veil consider combining the two to get the perfect headpiece. You may like to choose to wear the veil during the ceremony and then detach it for the reception. Alternatively you could choose to wear two separate headpieces; a veil for the ceremony and then a fascinator for the reception.

Choose the wedding dress before the headpiece – Unless the headpiece you intend to wear is a family heirloom it is wise to choose the dress before selecting the headpiece.

Consider custom made – Sometimes no matter how many headpieces you try on you just cannot find the “perfect one”. If you have a clear idea in mind of what you want consider getting a milliner to custom make your perfect headpiece. Give him/her your ideas and let them create that one-of-a-kind headpiece.
